Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing uses an industrial inkjet printer to apply water-based pigment ink directly into the fibers of a garment. The process starts with pretreatment — a liquid applied to the fabric that allows the ink, especially white ink used as an underbase on dark garments, to bond properly. The garment is then pressed to prepare the surface, loaded onto the printer’s platen, and the design is printed in a single digital pass. After printing, the ink is cured on the heat press to bond it permanently into the fabric.
The result is a print that sits inside the fabric rather than on top of it. This gives DTG its characteristic soft hand feel — the printed area feels like part of the garment, not like a layer sitting on it. DTG performs best on 100% cotton and high-cotton-content blends, where the ink fibers have the most to bond to.

What Is DTF Printing?
Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing takes a different route. Instead of applying ink directly to the garment, a commercial DTF printer lays the full-color design — including a white ink layer — onto a polyester transfer film. The film is coated with a hot-melt powder adhesive and cured. The finished transfer is then cut, matched to the correct garment, and heat-pressed onto the fabric, where the adhesive bonds the design permanently to the surface.
DTF prints sit slightly on top of the fabric rather than into it, giving the finished print a more defined surface texture. The trade-off is versatility: because DTF doesn’t require the ink to bond directly into fabric fibers, it works on virtually any material — cotton, polyester, nylon, spandex, canvas, and synthetic blends. Dark garments don’t need pretreatment since the white ink is built into the transfer process from the start.

The Key Differences That Actually Matter for Sellers
1. Fabric Type Is the Main Decision Factor
If your product line is built around 100% cotton blanks — which most premium apparel brands use — DTG is the natural choice. The ink bonds into cotton fibers more effectively than any other fabric, producing the softest feel and the most durable print.

For premium streetwear or lifestyle apparel where hand feel is part of the brand experience, DTG on cotton is usually the right choice. For activewear, accessories, or products where fabric flexibility matters more than softness, DTF is typically the better fit.
